Mary Ann Clary Hinson

Mary Ann Clary Hinson,86, departed this life on Tuesday, October 10, 2017, at home surrounded by her family at bedside. 

She was born February 11, 1931, to Louis B. and Sallie T. Clary, in Brunswick County, Virginia.

Mary Ann was preceded in death by her parents, her infant son, Paul, husband, Robert Brice Hinson, Sr., and mother-in-law, Annie Ruth Vaughan Hinson Deberry, daughter-in-law, Melisa B. Hinson, her brothers, Parris and Edwin Clary and her sisters, Marcella Jackson, Calvia Clary and Doma Cooper.

She was a loving mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother ("GG") who loved her family dearly. She loved to cook, feed everyone, and watch all the children playing around the house. The love and support she showed her family transcends all words. 

She is survived by her loving family; one sister, Sylvia Clary Davis; children, Robert Brice Hinson, Jr., Tina Hinson Craft and husband Gene, of the home, David Wayne Hinson, Lisa Hinson Barnes and husband Earl Barnes, Louis Brandford Hinson and Celia Hinson Sloop; grandchildren, Jennifer Craft Fields, Stephanie Nicole Harrell, Joshua Earl Barnes, David Wayne Hinson, Jr., Justin Gene Craft, Courtney Hinson Mercer, Teresa Beth Hinson Mallon, Melanie Rene' Sloop, Brandon Louis Hinson and Eric Michael Barnes; great grandchildren, Marianna Mechele Fields, Dalaina Reese Harrell, Emma Ruth Barnes, Lohla Rene' Holzworth, Luke Steven Barnes, Aubree Elise Barnes, Eliam Brice Harrell, Elliana Claire Harrell, and soon to be new great grandson, Adam Louis Mercer.

Graveside Services will be conducted in Old Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids Friday, October 13, 2017 at 12:00 noon. 

The family will receive friends one hour prior to graveside service beginning at 11:00 am at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service.

Flowers will be accepted or donations can be made in her honor to The Alzheimer's Foundation of America at www.alzfdn.org.

Arthur Lee Wollett Sr.

Arthur Lee Wollett, 84, died Saturday, October 14, 2017, at Universal Healthcare/North Raleigh. Arthur was born in Halifax County, November 12, 1932, to the late Henry and Maude Alston Wollett.

He was a veteran and proudly served his country with the United States Army.

Arthur was preceded in death by his brother Bob Wollett of Lynchburg, VA, and sister Camille Boseman of Halifax County, NC.

Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Crawley Wollett of the home; daughter Kim Abshire and husband, Kip; son, Art Wollett, Jr. and wife, Lou Ann, both of Wake Forest; grandchildren, Kameron Abshire and wife, Melissa, Kari Cross and husband, Braxton, Koy Dillard and husband, Trey, Kyle Abshire and wife, Jessica, Kristopher Abshire and fiancée, Hannah, Sarah Midgette and husband, Justin, Aaron Wollett, Zachary Wollett, Christian Wollett, and Arthur Lee Wollett, III (Trace). Also surviving are his great grandchildren, Michaela and Henry Abshire, Paityn and Paige Cross, Anna and Parker Dillard, Elijah and Grace Abshire, and Everly Midgette.

Rev. Roy Porter will conduct funeral services at Harris Chapel Baptist Church Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 2:00 pm.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to service beginning at 1:00 pm also at the church. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Mary Elizabeth “Betty” Millen, 73, died Wednesday, October 18, 2017, at Nash UNC Hospital in Rocky Mount.

Betty was born in Halifax County, November 17, 1943, to the late James L. and Adele Davis Wood. 

She was a long-time member of Little Country Baptist Church and a loving mother and grandmother. 

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, James Robert “Bob” Millen.

Surviving are her son, Christopher “Kris” E. Kling and wife Darlene of Roanoke Rapids and her grandchildren, Erika Jordan Kling and Ronnie Wayne Sanderson.

Rev. James Jenkins will conduct a graveside service Sunday, October 22, 2017, in Cedarwood Cemetery at 2:00 pm. 

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service prior to graveside services from 12:30-1:30 pm.

Linda Ann Brown Morris

Linda Ann Brown Morris, 64, passed away Friday, October 20, 2017.

Linda was born July 31, 1953 in Halifax County to the late Wade Horne and Vernie Davis Horne. She was also preceded in death by her son, Gary Steven Wicker; by her sister, Judy; her brother, Richard.

She was a most caring mother and nana, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who will be truly missed.

Linda is survived by her son, Steve Brown and his wife Barbee of Greensboro; her daughter, Amanda Brown and her husband Michael Judge of Roanoke Rapids; her fiancé, Keith Boyd of Boydton, VA; her grandchildren, Tori, Brittany, Aliyah, Wesley, Rob and Paislee; her great-grandchildren, Kaedence and Cole; her brothers, James, Kelly, Mike and Ronnie; her sisters, Helen, Jane, Janet, Sharon and Susan; many nieces and nephews; very special best friend, Connie.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, October 23, 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service. Burial will follow in the Macon Price Cemetery in Gaston. The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the home of her daughter, 412 East 3rd Street, Roanoke Rapids.

Barney Lee Jones, 90, of Regency Drive in Nashville, formerly of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Friday, November 3, 2017, at home.

Barney was born June 6, 1927, in Bossier Parrish, La, to the late Levi Jones and Orilla Holland Jones. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Marie Jones Kelch; his brother, Benjamin Jones; and his son-in-law, P.J. Burnsworth.

He was a devoted family man who loved his family. He also loved bass fishing.

Barney is survived by his loving wife, Reva Barnett Jones of the home; his children, Roy Jones of Roanoke Rapids, Ashley Jones and his wife Ann of Durham, Patricia Holloman and her husband Vic of Nashville, Kenneth Jones and his wife Rosemary of Roanoke Rapids, Diane Barnsworth of Uniontown, PA and Gail Porter and her husband Steve of Roanoke Rapids; eleven grandchildren; twenty-one great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; his sisters-in-law Carol Williams and Martha Hartsoe; a special extended family member, Sandra Griffin; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special thanks to the staff of Kindred Hospice and especially Angela Bridgers and Allison Banszak for their love and caring attention.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, November 6, 2017, at Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon with Rev. Jerry Waters officiating.

Kenneth Beauford Robinson

Kenneth “Kenny” Beauford Robinson, 68, of Hwy 48, Roanoke Rapids passed away Saturday, November 4, 2017 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Kenny was born in Mooresville, NC on May 22, 1949 to Bill and Elsie Huffman Robinson.  He is preceded in death by his father, Bill Robinson; two sons, Kevin and Jeffrey Robinson; his grandson, Brian Bradley.

His favorite pastime was watching episodes of Gunsmoke and Bonanza.

Kenny is survived by his mother, Elsie Robinson; his daughters, Tammy Bradley and husband Dennis, Renee Bradley and fiancé Barney Ashworth, Lara Ann Lassiter and husband Jason and twin daughters, Lynn Ohlinger and Laura Beebe; his son, Michael “Bennie” Davis; a special grandson Mathew Liles; eight more grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his brothers, Carl Robinson and wife JoAnn and Mitchell Robinson and wife Wannapha.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 8, 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Preacher Steven Tondee officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 – 2:30 prior to the service.  Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

Vernon Pittard

Vernon Pittard, 85, died at his home with his loving family by his side, November 11, 2017.

Vernon was born, January 23, 1932, in Halifax County to the late Sterling Wilson and Mattie May Morgan Pittard.

He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, uncle and friend, who loved the outdoors, especially, working in his yard and garden. 

In addition to his parents, Vernon was preceded in death by his sisters, Mildred, Dorothy, Annie, Catherine and brother, George Pittard.

Surviving are his wife of 62 years, Janice Hawkins Pittard, of the home; sons, Mike Pittard and wife Jean, of Roanoke Rapids and Randy Pittard and wife, Debbie, of Zebulon, NC; brother, Dock Pittard; sister, Julia Hawkins, both of Roanoke Rapids and grandchildren, Gregory and Eric Pittard. 

The family would like to give a special thanks to his caregivers, Beverly Norman, Tony, Ted, Patricia, Mary and Lynn. Also, a special thanks to his physical therapist, Teresa Myrick, who went beyond expectations to care for Vernon. 

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Monday, November 13, 2017 from 6-8 pm. 

Rev. Sid Collins will conduct funeral services at Hawkins Chapel UMC Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at 2:00 pm with interment to follow in the church cemetery.

Sally Jones Parson, 81, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Sunday, November 26, 2017, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law.

She was born November 23, 1936, in Northampton County to the late Rufus Lewis Jones and Dora Harrell Jones.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, James D. Parson.

Sally was a member of Calvary Baptist church. She was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker.

Sally is survived by her daughter, Linda Evans and her husband Jimmy of Roanoke Rapids; her niece, Heather Lee Caldwell and her husband Kelly and her great niece, Virginia Tamargo, all of Covington, TN.

The family would like to give special thanks to the staff of HRMC, Wake Heart Center, Community Home Health and Hospice and Dr. Maradiago and staff at Halifax Medical Specialists.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Martin officiating.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and other times at 109 Landfall Court.  

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Alton “Gene” Eugene Hales, 82, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2017, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Gene was born June 1, 1935 in Johnston County, NC to the late Vernon Worth Hales and Hazel Minshew Hales. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Bobby, Randall and L.V. Hales.

He was a member of Quankie Baptist Church and was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Gene is survived by his wife Janice Hux Hales of the home; his daughters, Valerie Henley and her husband Terry and Vanessa Turner and her husband Rock both of Roanoke Rapids; his grandchildren, Amanda and Magen Henley, Justin Turner, Brandon Williams and Spencer Turner; his great-grandchildren, Nevaeh and Kaydence Robinson; his brothers, Donald Hales and Larry “Tim” Hales and his wife Janice both of Roanoke Rapids; numerous nieces and nephews, brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Friday, December 1, 2017 at Quankie Baptist Church with Dr. Lavelle Waters officiating.

Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Betty Moody Ferguson, 70, of Hamilton Street, Roanoke Rapids, passed away Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at home.

Betty was born October 22, 1947, in Halifax County to the late James A. Moody and Agnes Taylor Moody.  She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Nikki Batten.

Betty is survived by her husband, Willie Ferguson of the home; her son, Chad C. Ferguson; her daughter, Shannan F. McKenzie; her brothers, William C. Moody, Andy J. Moody and Danny R. Moody; her grandchildren, Toren Boss, Cameron Korkmaz, Natalie Korkmaz, Chloe McKenzie, Brittany Brown Poole, Nevyn Ferguson and Trevynn Ferguson; her great-grandchildren, Liam Poole and Jacob Poole.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 P.M. Monday, December 4, 2017 at Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

Nancy Pulley Skov, 88, of 307 Jackson Street, Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away on Friday the 1st of December at her home with family by her side. 

She was daughter of the late Hervie Lee Gray and his wife LueAllie “Pat” Gray. 

She was also preceded in death by first husband Willie Gordon Pulley of Littleton, her second Husband Delbert R. Skov of Kansas, her son Willie “Jabo” Pulley of Roanoke Rapids and two sisters Doris Carter and Patricia Witt. 

Nancy went to Littleton High School then married and moved to Roanoke Rapids where she raised five children and several grandchildren while working full time for J P Stevens textile for forty years until they shut down.  She is survived by one brother William “Bill/Earl” Gray and his wife Vickie and his sons Billy, Chris and daughter Erica. 

She is also survived by four children Brenda Pulley Vaughan, Michael A. Pulley and his wife Teresa, Beverly Pulley Jolly and her husband Mark and Keith D. Pulley. 

Surviving her also are eight Grandchildren, LaraAnn, Lisa, Arthur, Douglas, Michael, Billy, Michelle and Kim.  She has seventeen Great-Grandchildren and eighteen Great-Great-Grandchildren and several Nieces and Nephews and many more relatives and extended family members. 

Nancy loved working in her home with all her dolls and whatnots and enjoyed working in her garden with her flowers and decorating for Christmas. 

Nancy was a fire-breathing Christian lady that believed in the Lord and stressed that to all she was associated with. 

Special thanks to Hospice and their staff for the special needed care they provided. 

Hockaday Funeral Home, 507 US 158 Highway West Roanoke Rapids, NC, is handling the arrangements. 

The family will receive visitors from 7 to 830 pm Sunday the 3rd of December at Hockaday Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at Hockaday Funeral Home Monday the 4th of December at 11 a.m.
