Doris Fulghum Leake

Doris Fulghum Leake, 78, died Monday, August 18, 2014 at her home.

Mrs. Leake was born October 7, 1935, in Halifax County, to the late Annie Smith and John Wesley Fulghum.  

Mrs. Leake was a lifelong member of Smith United Methodist Church, where she served as organist for over 55 years.

Mrs. Leake taught 5th grade for two years in Danville, Va. and taught 3rd grade at Manning Elementary School in Roanoke Rapids for 28 years.  She was also a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority.   

In addition to her parents Mrs. Leake is preceded in death by her brother, John Wesley Fulghum, Jr.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, James “June Bug” Leake of the home; her daughter: Susan Young and husband Mike of Knightdale; her grandson: James Bryan Young; sister:  Barbara Polky and husband Vane of Knightdale; and sisters-in-law: Maxine Holloman and Marion White, both of Roanoke Rapids.  Mrs. Leake is also survived by her nieces: Sharon Moore and husband Page; Melanie Gardner and husband David; Dottie Thompson and husband Jerry; and Linda King; and special caregiver Dora Garner.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 22, 2014 at 2:00 PM at Smith United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Schwartz and Rev. Curtis Mull officiating. Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.  

The family will receive friends Thursday, August 21, 2014, from 6:30 to 8:30pm at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service and other times at the home.

Flowers are welcome or Memorial Contributions may be made to Smith United Methodist Church Building Fund 1215 Smith Church Rd. Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870.
