Inez C. Wheeler

Inez C. Wheeler, 80, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2018, at her home in Roanoke Rapids.

Inez was born September 22, 1937, in Hamilton, Alabama, to the late Oma Lee and Anderson Coons.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leon Earl Wheeler, Sr.; her brothers, Arnold Coons and Donald Coons; her sister, Mary Jean Coons and her adoptive parents, Rev. Daniel and Mae Hux.

Inez traveled throughout the United States with her husband and family as called on by the Air Force.

Upon her husband’s retirement from the Air Force they settled in Roanoke Rapids as their home.

She was raised in Hamilton, Alabama, until she was 12 years old when her parents passed away and she with other siblings moved to Roanoke Rapids where they lived with Rev. Daniel and Mae Hux.  

Under their guidance she accepted Christ and continued to serve Him throughout her days.

She loved spending time with her sister, Peggy Haskins, as well as a large extended family that would frequently gather to enjoy fellowship, laugh, and remember all the good times they shared.  

Inez was a loving wife and mother that always had much love to give to anyone in need. She contributed to various charities and volunteered in home and foreign missions/ministries at Roanoke Rapids Church of God.

Inez is survived by her children, Earl Wheeler, Jr. and his wife Vicki, James Keith Wheeler and his wife JoAnn Wheeler and Renee Alston and her friend Gerald; her sister, Peggy Haskins and Gene; her grandchildren, Christopher Wheeler and his wife Tiffany, Matthew Wheeler and his wife Stephanie, Lance Wheeler, Jennifer Newsome, Emmie Garner and her husband Glenn, Josh Wheeler, Miranda Wheeler, Ben Wheeler, Sarah Daugherty and her fiancé Emery Cribb, Cole Daugherty, Courtney Harper and Blake Alston; Pat Newsome and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 P.M. Monday, May 7, 2018, at the Roanoke Rapids Church of God with Rev. Jerry Waters officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 10:30 – 11:30 A.M. at the church prior to the service.

Edward Randolph Shell, 82, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Friday, May 11, 2018, at Liberty Commons.

Randolph was born October 12, 1935, in Halifax County to the late Herbert Edward Shell and Blanche Neal Shell.

He was also preceded in death by his wife, Grady McNeil Shell.

Randolph was Co-Owner of Shell Electric.

He is survived by his son, Edward Randolph Shell, Jr.  “Randy” of Atlanta, GA; his brother, Tom Shell and his wife Dot of Roanoke Rapids.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Tuesday, May 15, 2018 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Monday, May 14, 2108 at the funeral home. The family requests that everyone attend the funeral and visitation in casual attire. Jeans and shorts are acceptable.

Barbara Faye Bohanon Pittman

Barbara Faye Bohanon Pittman departed this life on Friday, May 11th, 2018, at Vidant Hospital in Greenville, NC, surrounded by her loving family after losing her battle with cancer.

She was 70 years old.

She was born on March 25, 1948, to James and Faye P. Bohanon.

Along with her deep love and care for her family and friends, she loved meeting new friends, traveling and everything Elvis Presley.

Her sweet, precious memory will be forever treasured by her loving daughter, Sandy Ferrell Dixon and her husband Jeffrey; her mother, Faye P. Bohanon; her dear grandchildren, granddaughter, Ashley Collins Bellamy and her husband Brad and her great granddaughter Jerzee Bellamy; and grandson, Charles Cameron Podruchny; her two step granddaughters, Kelly and Caitlyn Dixon; her big brothers, James “Jimmie” Bohannon and D.D. “Bo” Bohanon; two nieces, Tammy Clark and her husband Bob, and Carol Dee Bohanon; two nephews, Michael Bohanon and his wife Kim and daughter Ashlyn, Brian Bohanon and his wife Robin and sons Seth and Carson; her stepdaughter, Towana Blackmon and her husband Michael and her step grandson Chase; her Aunt, Elaine Turner and her husband Robert, her special friend, Rose Grant; and her granddog, “Presley”and many other family and friends.

She was predeceased by her Father, James Bohanon, her late husband Benjamin Pittman and her sister in law, Joyce D. Bohannon.

The family will receive friends from 3:00pm to 5:00pm on Sunday, May 13th, and the memorial service will be held on Monday, May 14th, 2018 at 3:00 pm at  Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Charlotte Wanda Ayres Bryant

Charlotte Wanda Ayres Bryant passed away Sunday, May 20, 2018, at her daughter’s home.

Wanda was born November 26, 1939, in Rockbridge County, Virginia, to the late Harry and Effie Ramsey Ayres. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Matthew Bryant; her sisters, Dawn Burch and Norma Staton; her brothers, Daniel and Douglas Ayres.

Wanda was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She retired from J. P. Stevens after more than 30 years of service.

Wanda is survived by her daughter, Tammy Fahey and her husband Chris; her son, Timmy Bryant and his wife Christine; her granddaughter, Dana McCoy and her husband Josh; her grandson, Matt Fahey and Natalie France; her great-granddaughter, Leighton Fahey and her great-grandson, Liam McCoy all of Roanoke Rapids; her brothers-in-law, Houston Staton and Larry Burch; her sister-in-law Teresa Ayres and her brother, Ronnie Ayres.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 23, 2018 in the chapel of Hockaday funeral and Cremation service with Rev. Wayne Marshall officiating.

Burial will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 – 1:30 P.M. Wednesday prior to the service and other times at the home of her daughter.

Wilson Augustus Miles

Wilson Augustus Miles passed from his earthly to his heavenly home on Thursday, May 24, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was 89 years old.

A Halifax County native, he was born January 30, 1929. Wilson served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

He was an avid outdoorsman and was known to his community, hunting club, family as “Treeclimber.”

Wilson worked for and retired from Roanoke Construction Company.

Wilson was a dedicated son, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ellis Wilson Miles and Betty Brown Miles, two brothers Raymond and Douglas Miles, one sister, Josie M. Pruden, one granddaughter, Courtney Wynn Pittman, sister in law, Doris Miles and brother in laws, Nelson Pruden, Pete Luter and Robert Williams.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lois F. Miles; children and spouses, Wilson Miles Jr (Pia), Tony Miles (Debbie), Wanda Sherman (Gary) and Linda Aycock (Wayne);n grandchildren Devon Miles, Scott Miles, Wynn Beale, Carrigan Harris, Alexander Sherman, Gabrielle Sherman; great-grandchildren, Amber Shadrick, Ava Lewis and Samuel Miles;n Brothers and sisters, Morene M. Little (Bobby), Nora M. Warren (E.C.), Mary M. Williamsn (Robert), Emily M. Luter (Pete), Ellis W. Miles (Ethel), Dorothy M. Ennis (Jim), Charles Miles (Jonnie), Donald Miles (Rachel), Betty Clary (David); sister-in-law, Edna Miles; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Friends may visit with the family at Hockaday Funeral Home on Friday evening from 6-8pm.

Deanna Ruth Lynch, 62, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, passed away May 30th, 2018, in Raleigh, NC.

A memorial service to celebrate Deanna’s life will be held at 3:30 P.M. Sunday, June 3, 2018, in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 – 3:00 P.M. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Deanna was born in Fredericksburg, VA, to David and Catherine Meadows on September 12, 1955.

A 1972 graduate of Spotsylvania High School, she went on to study Journalism at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Deanna prospered as a journalist and editor at the Roanoke Rapids Daily Herald and the Littleton Observer.

She also worked at Halifax County Government where her son, Shane Lynch, followed in her footsteps.

Deanna is preceded in death by her parents, David and Catherine; three brothers Dallas (Luke) Meadows, Richard Meadows, William Meadows, and her husband Carl Lynch.

Deanna is survived by her sisters Geraldine Meadows of Bealeton, VA, Jewel Cheshire (Pete) of Romney, WV, Nancy Meadows of Hot Springs, VA, and brother Eddie Meadows of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Sons Carlton Shane Lynch (Mary Davis) and Jacob Lynch (Samantha Porch) of Roanoke Rapids, NC; Grandchildren Jayden Lynch and Aniella Rizzitano of Roanoke Rapids; a wealth of nieces and nephews; loved ones Kandeice Whitehurst and Ashley Carita.

The family wishes to extend their gratitude to Wake Medical Center of Raleigh, NC for their help and support.

James 'Jimmy' Vernon Tucker Jr.

James “Jimmy” Vernon Tucker, Jr., of Roanoke Rapids, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, May 31, 2018.

Jimmy was born March 7, 1955, in Warren County to the late James Vernon Tucker, Sr. and Emma Moore Tucker. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Aline “Mary” Tharrington.

Jimmy loved his music and being a mechanic.

He was a loving husband and friend, a great father and grandfather/Papa.

Jimmy loved meeting people, fishing, hunting and metal detecting.

He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Betty Tucker; his daughters, Tonya Gaylor and her husband Scott, Crystal Jensen and her husband Matt and Amanda Ott and her husband Mikey; his grandchildren, Makayla Jensen, Kameron Jensen and Tucker Lee Ott; his sisters, Ann Proffitt and her husband Roger, Nita Parsley and her husband David; his brothers, Frank Tucker and Kenny Tucker and his wife Donna; a special friend that was like a brother, Willie Ferguson and numerous nieces and nephews and extended family.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday, June 4, 2018, in the chapel of Hockaday funeral and Cremation Service with Rev. David Martin and Brother Butch Moseley officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Alice  Pearson Garner

Alice  Pearson Garner passed away at Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Weldon, NC, on Saturday, June 2, 2018.

She was born on May 20, 1924, to Dora and James Pearson as the ninth of ten children. She was the only surviving sibling of seven brothers and two sisters.

Mrs. Garner was married to the late George Fulghum Garner, Sr. for fifty-nine years. He preceded her in death in 2004.

They have three children: Glenn garner, Sr. (wife Gail) of Halifax, NC, George Garner, Jr. (wife Ann) of Lancaster, SC, and Nancy Harper (husband Jerry) of Oriental, NC; eight grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren: Jay and Susan Harper (Pearson & Cameron), Kevin Harper, Michelle & Nick Salter (Austin Bigley), Michael & Tracey Garner (Tyler & Alexis), Glenn & Emmie Garner, Rebecca & Michael Kresse (Grayson, Emma, Abigail, Haley & Matthew), Timmy & Denisha Story (Kaylee, Brody Green & Jax Green), and Tracy & Liz Story.

During her working career, she was employed at Leggetts as a salesperson, at William R. Davie as a substitute teacher, and at Nichols Jewel Box as a salesperson. She also did volunteer work with Meals on Wheels.

Mrs. Garner’s love for children was most evident with her grandchildren, but she also shared her love with the children in public school and those she worked with at Smith United Methodist Church.

She was a lifelong member of Smith Church and was very active in the WMU, the Adult Choir, and served on numerous church committees and boards. She remained faithful in her attendance and service to her church as long as her health allowed.

At Liberty Commons, where she resided for the past eight years, she was known as the “lady with the beautiful smile.”

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation for the love and care given to Mrs. Garner by the Liberty nurses and staff and her Smith Church family.

The celebration of life service for Mrs. Garner will be at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, June 6, 2018, at Smith United Methodist Church, with visitation from 1:00 – 2:30 pm in the church sanctuary. At other times, the family will be meeting at the home of Glenn & Gail Garner at 663 Trueblood Road, Halifax, NC 27839. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Building Fund of Smith United Methodist Church at 1215 Smith Church Road, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870 or to the Home Delivered Meals of Halifax County, attention Gail Garner, 26 N. King Street, PO Box 646, Halifax, NC 27839.

Linda Daniel Carter

Linda Daniel Carter of Roanoke Rapids went home to be with the Lord on Thursday May 31, 2018.

Linda was born on January 23, 1950, in Hertford County to the late Ruth Daniel. She was also preceded in death by her step-father, James Daniel and her brother, Randy Mitchell.

Linda was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend.

She was a Christian and a faithful member of Victory Baptist Church.

She was a homemaker who especially loved children, cooking, Christmas, and most of all, her family. She loved the Lord and served Him all her life.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 48 ½ years, John H. Carter, Jr.; her daughters, Heather Blythe and husband Jeff, Jennifer Short and husband Brian, Felicia Snider and husband Johnny; her grandchildren, Rebecca Blythe, Matt Blythe, Isabella Short, Tristan Short, Jayden Hinds, Aubri Hinds, Jaylen Snider, and Penelope Snider; her brother Keith Daniel and his wife Debbie, her step-sister Gail Britt and husband Ronnie, her step-brothers Robert Earl Daniel and wife Shirley and Kenneth and his wife Diane; a special sister-in-law Sandra Carter, whom she loved like a daughter; and numerous extended family members.

A private graveside service was held on Monday, June 4, 2018 at Cedarwood Cemetery with Rev. Jeremy Kobernat officiating.

The family received friends from 7-8 PM Sunday, June 3, 2018 at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Harvey 'Gene' Miles

Harvey “Gene” Miles, age 80, went home to be with the Lord at his home on June 5, 2018, in Roanoke Rapids, NC.

Gene was born April 18, 1938 to the late Wreford and Betty “Lula” Miles.

He is preceded in death by his son, Bryant “Eddie” Miles, two brothers, Marvin and Garner Miles, and a sister, Betty Miles.

He leaves living on in his memory his children: Ricky and wife Linda of California, Jamie and wife Terry of Darlington, NC, Lorie and husband David of Darlington, NC,

Kris and wife Lisa of Roanoke Rapids, NC; grandchildren: Brandy, Brandon, Jade, Michael, Heather and husband Dennis, Scott and fiancé Kristin, KJ and wife Megan, and Shannon;

great-grandchildren: Adalaina, Ryan, Scottie, and Brantley; two brothers: Johnny and wife Cathy of Richmond, VA, Raymond and wife Amerilus of Roanoke Rapids, NC; a sister Paulette of Roanoke Rapids, NC; along with many nieces and nephews.

Gene loved his family and spoke of them often. He loved the outdoors and being in the yard working.

Gene was a very hard worker and would help anyone who needed anything.

Gene worked for Rightmyer Machine Rentals for 40+ years where he ran heavy machinery and from which he later retired.

A memorial service for Gene will be held at 2:00 pm Sunday, June 10, 2018, at the residence, 237 Jim Martin Drive in Roanoke Rapids.

The family asks that visitors and all flowers be sent to the home.

Mrs. Geraldine Acree "Deanie" Allen, 81, of Roanoke Rapids, died June 8, 2018, in the Hospice Facility at Vidant Medical Center.

Born as a twin on August 3, 1936, in Halifax County, Deanie and her sister Teanie were daughters of Lascree and Effie Beatrice Sasser Acree.  

Deanie was retired from the textiles industry.

She was a loving wife, mother, sister and friend.

Survivors include her daughter, Kim A. Kidd; son, Keith Allen; step-daughter, Jean A. Landen; sisters, Teanie Garner (Earl) and Lillie Wright; sister-in-law, Dorothy Waters; grandchildren, Alan Kidd, Blake Danielle Kidd; step-grandchildren, Jason Allen Landen, Jessica L. Watts; step-great-grandchildren, Nathan Watts and Bristol Faith Landen; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Deanie was preceded in death by her parents;  husband, Laster Allen; son-in-law, Ronnie Kidd; brothers, Son and Randolph; and sisters, Bootsie and Lucille.

The family will receive friends at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service from 5:00 - 7:00 pm Sunday, June 10, 2018.

Pastor Wayne White will conduct the funeral service at 2:00 pm Monday, June 11, 2018 in the Chapel of Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, with interment to follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Adam Thomas Bradley, 27, of Raleigh, formerly of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Monday, June 11, 2018.

Adam was born May 5, 1991, in Nash County to Ricky Bradley and Cynthia Wilson Bradley.

He was preceded in death by his Maternal Grandmother, Janice Honea; his Paternal Grandparents, George and Ruth Bradley.

Adam is at peace at last.

He loved playing his guitar, was an avid fisherman and also loved playing tennis. Adam had a soft spot for dogs, especially Daisy, Annabelle and Murphy.

Adam is survived by his mother Cindy Bradley of Raleigh; his father and step-mother, Ricky and LaDorne Bradley of Halifax; his sisters, Christy Hudson and her husband Danny and Tonya Hasty and her husband Chuck both of Roanoke Rapids; his nieces and nephews, Amanda Phillips, Macie Hasty, Karson Hasty and Trey Hasty; his aunts and uncles, Dianne Clary and her husband Jeff of Emporia, VA, and Carol Holton of Chicago, IL; his step-grandfather, Donald Haskins of Halifax.

A celebration of Adam’s life will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 16, 2018, at Victory Baptist Church.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. Friday, June 15, 2018, at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at his father’s home.

Grady Lee Neal Sr.

Mr. Grady Lee Neal, Sr., 82, of Roanoke Rapids died June 25, 2018 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Grady was born in Nash County on August 29, 1935.  

His parents were Ezzie Bacle and Sadie Rae Bryant Bacle.

An enterprising entrepreneur, he began his career at Harrison Joyner, and later was involved in real estate, restoring classic cars, motorcycles, picking junk yards and flea markets.  

He was retired from the City of Roanoke Rapids where he served as a driver/ \operator in the fire department for 15 years. He was a US Army veteran.

Grady was a member of Liberty Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include his wife,  Helen Sanders Neal; son, Grady Lee "Bear" Neal, Jr. of Green Bay, WI; daughters, Cindy N. White (Lawrence), Shaun Rightmyer (Doug), and Cricket Moseley (Joey), all of Roanoke Rapids; stepson, Tim Sanders of Roanoke Rapids; grandchildren, Samantha Leigh Meeks, Grady L. "Gray" Neal, III, Hayden Neal Rightmyer, Nathan Tobias Moseley, Addison Grace Rightmyer, Elijah James Moseley; two step-grandchildren, Lauren Sanders Welch, Matthew Cole Sanders; nephew, Rip Bryant; niece, Debbie Bryant Wheeler.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, William D. "Bill" Bryant, and his beloved dog, George.

Friends may visit with the family from 6 - 8 pm Wednesday at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service; and, at other times at the residence of Shaun and Doug Rightmyer.

The funeral service for Mr. Neal will be held at 1:00 pm Thursday at Liberty Pentecostal Holiness Church, with Pastor Tony Smith presiding.  

Interment will follow in Quankie Baptist Church Cemetery.

Willard Ray Pittman

Mr. Willard Ray Pittman, 78, of Littleton, died June 30, 2018, at his residence.

Born January 11, 1940, in Halifax County, he was the son of William Ray Pittman and Violet Sue Draper Pittman.  

His parents, and two brothers, Curtis and Monte, preceded him in death.

Willard was a skilled welder, a profession he enjoyed all his life.  He was a member of Iron Workers Local #30, then later joined the Boilermakers – Iron Ship Building, Local Lodge #45.  He loved his wife, children and grandchildren; enjoyed traveling and movies.

Willard loved and lived life to the fullest.

Survivors include his wife, Lydia Jenkins Pittman; daughter, Wanda Jones and husband Spencer of Morehead City; son, Jason Ray Pittman and wife Laine Moore Pittman of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Sandra Warren of Darlington; grandchildren, Brandy Davis and husband Marcus, Dustin Jones, Hunter Elizabeth Jones, Christian Pittman, Abbie Pittman, Jackson Sharpe and Lucas Sharpe; great-grandchildren, Hayley Shaw and Bryson Davis; and sisters-in-law, Eula Shearin, Daisy Newsom and Betsy Rains; nieces and nephews.

The service to celebrate Willard’s life will be held at 11:00 am Wednesday, July 4, 2018 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service with Minister Jeff Haislip presiding.

Friends may visit with the family at the funeral home from 10 – 10:45 am Wednesday, prior to the service.

William Thomas Conner Jr., 67, of Roanoke Rapids, died Tuesday evening, July 3, 2018, in his home.

William Thomas Conner

William was born in Halifax County on December 22, 1950.  

He served as a Combat Engineer in the US Army during the Vietnam War.  

Following his service, William worked as a pipe fitter in the construction industry.

William enjoyed playing golf, fishing and dancing; he was a jokester and loved storytelling.   

He enjoyed his friends and never met a stranger; but most of all, he loved his grandchildren.

Survivors include his son, Raymond Conner; daughters, Tiffany True and Michelle Conner; grandchildren, Brittany Nicole Crawford, Patrick Hunter Heustess, Amanda Jane Bradley, Jamie Elizabeth Conner, Harley Paige Hall, Randall Junior Turner, Robert Thomas Turner, Summer Ashley True and Kassidy Raye Conner; great-grandchildren, Tommy Ray and CJ; and sisters, Norma Munn and Rose Grant.

Friends are invited to visit with the family from 6:00 - 8:00 pm Monday, July 9, at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.  

William requested cremation, and other services will be private.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the organization of the donor's choice.
