Henry Shipley Ford

Henry Shipley Ford, 73, a native of Seaboard, N.C., passed away at home Friday, June 16, 2017, with his family at his side.

He was the son of the late Lester Shipley Ford Jr. and Mildred Forbis Ford.
He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Mildred Ford Wilson and her husband, Richard; Dolores Ford Newsome; and his nephew, Brian Maus.
A devoted family man, he is survived by his sister, Henrietta “Susie” Ford Maus and her husband, Jim; his wife of 51 years, Ann Bradley Ford; a daughter, Maria Ford Myers; a son, Henry Bradley Ford and his wife, Andrea; five grandchildren, Zoe Myers; Sydney McCraw and Holden, Payton and Cullen Ford; nieces and nephews, Karen, Debbie, Rhonda, Scott, Ronnie and Les.
He graduated from Frederick Military Academy and attended Chowan University and Campbell College.
He was office manager for Superior Stone Company in Ryan, S.C., and was an alcohol law enforcement officer with the North Carolina Department of Crime Control until his retirement.
He served as a Seaboard town commissioner, was an active Boy Scout leader and Mason and was also active in his church.
After retirement, he managed Superior Gin Company and worked as a firearms instructor at Odom Prison.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at East 10th Street Church of Christ with Dave Chapman, Minister officiating. Burial will follow in Seaboard Cemetery with Masonic Graveside Rites. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 P.M. Monday, June 19, 2017 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home.

Joan Christine Harlow Wheeler

Joan Christine Harlow Wheeler, 78, passed away Saturday, June 17, 2017 surrounded by her family at Hunter Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Rocky Mount.

Joan was born July 4, 1938 in Halifax County to the late Clarence Cleveland Harlow and Callree Alligood Harlow. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Frank Wheeler; her daughter, Penny Jennings; her brother, Charles W. Harlow and her brother-in-law, Charles T. Davis.

Joan was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and sister. She loved being a C.N.A. and working in the Emergency Room where she retired from Halifax Regional Medical Center. Above all else she loved her Lord and Savior. She was also a longtime member of Harvest Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Joan is survived by her daughter, Peggy Bulluck and her husband Bruce of Nashville, NC; her special companion, Toby; her grandchildren, Carla Leigh Freeman, Leann Jennings Tucker and her husband Jake, Andrew Jennings and Melissa Jennings; her great-grandchildren, Makaleigh Wynn, Ryne Harlow, Taylor-Jane O’Neil and Melody Annaleigh; her sister, Yvonne Harlow Davis of Chester, VA; her sister-in-law Barbara Harlow of Wilmington, NC; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 21, 2017 at Harvest Temple Pentecostal Church with Rev. Norwood Starling and Rev. Chuck Davis officiating. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery in Weldon. The family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 20, 2017 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service.

Clara Lee Coburn Whitman

Clara Lee Coburn Whitman, formerly of Greensboro, NC, passed away Monday, June 19, 2017.

Mrs. Whitman was born, December 15, 1921, in Blackstone, VA to the late Robert Elwood and Mable Chessie Coburn. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Robert Whitman; brother, William Coburn and sister, Marie Weathersbee.

Surviving are her sons, Kenneth Wayne Whitman, of Youngsville and George Elwood Whitman and wife, Betty, of Louisburg, John Stanley Whitman and wife, Esther, of Zebulon and daughters, Sandra Whitman Borrell of Roanoke Rapids and Bonnie Loy and husband, Donny of Gibsonville, NC and sister, Lida Alexander. Also surviving are 21 grandchildren, 47 great grandchildren and 8 great-great grandchildren.

She was a member of Roanoke Rapids First Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 A.M. Thursday, June 22, 2017 at Raleigh Memorial Park in Raleigh, NC with Pastor Matthew Smith officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions be made to Home Health and Hospice of Halifax, 1229 Julian R. Allsbrook Hwy, Roanoke Rapids, NC 27870, with a special “Thank You” to the entire staff.

John Oliver Davis Jr.

Joseph Oliver Davis, Jr., 84, died at his residence Saturday, June 17, 2017.

Mr. Davis was born in Johnston County, November 18, 1932, to the late Joseph Oliver Davis, Sr. and Lola Nerron Davis. He served in the United States Air Force for over 20 years. In addition to his parents, Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife, Frances “Sally” Davis; daughter, Angela Faye Davis and son, Gary Joe “Beau” Davis.

Surviving are his sons James D. “K.C.” Davis and Robert Earl Davis; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

The family will hold a gathering of friends to remember Mr. Davis’ life Thursday, June 22, 2017, at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service from 5-7 pm.

Hugh Lee Swink

Hugh Lee Swink, 79, of Roanoke Rapids went to be with his Savior Jesus Christ Saturday, June 24, 2017 at his residence.

Lee was born April 10, 1938 in Cherryville, NC to the late William Charles Swink and Lola Tessner Swink. He was also preceded in death by two brothers, Kenneth Swink and Benny Swink; seven sisters, Louise Bridgers, Marthel Philbeck, Dorothy McNeilly, Helen Owensby, Catherine Swink, Betty Bowen and Janis Carpenter.
Lee retired from WestPoint Stevens in Roanoke Rapids as a mechanic. He loved spending time at the lake, gardening, NASCAR, beating the competition at the local turkey shoots and above all spending time with his family. He was known as Gee Gee to his grandchildren. Lee was a very loving person, hardworking.
Lee is survived by his wife of 57 years, Ramona Vann Swink; his sons, David Swink and his wife Nina of Roanoke Rapids and Glenn Swink and his wife Joy of Nashville; his grandchildren, Lauren Bright and her husband Ben of Sunbury, Jacob Swink and his wife Elizabeth of New Bern, Hunter Swink and Colton Swink both of Nashville; his sister, Joyce Dedmon of Shelby; his brothers, Edward Swink and his wife Linda of Mooresville and A.V. (Shorty) Swink and his wife Linda of Grover.
Funeral services will be held 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, June 28, 2017 in the chapel of Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service. Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Tuesday, June 27, 2017 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home of his son, David.

William M. 'Bill' Collins

William M.”Bill” Collins, 68, died Monday, June 26, 2017, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Bill was born in Halifax County, NC, January 08, 1949, to the late Beroy and Lucille L. Blake Collins. He was “the caring person” who would take people to doctor appointments, to visit friends, to the grocery store and to church or anyway someone needed a ride. He was an active deacon at Doors of Praise and Worship Church in Gaston and was the manager of the Farmer’s Market in Roanoke Rapids. In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Debbie F. Collins and his dog, Midnight.

Surviving are his brother, J.B. Collins and wife, Myrtle of Roanoke Rapids; niece, Crystal Staton, her husband, Thomas and their children, Haley and Clint all of Georgia; special friend, Mary Lipscomb and special cousin, Brenda Clary, both of Roanoke Rapids. Also surviving are many nieces, nephews and his loving church family.

Pastor Russ Collins will conduct funeral services in the chapel at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Thursday, June 29, 2017, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery.

Jimmy Davis Coggins

Jimmy Davis Coggins, 69, of Piney Grove Church Road, Littleton passed away Friday, June 30, 2017 at Nash General Hospital.

Jimmy was born October 26, 1947 in Halifax County to the late Harvey Coggins and Mittie Lou Barnes Coggins.

Jimmy loved fishing and was an avid Carolina fan. He also loved working in the yard. Most of all he loved our Lord and Savior and singing about him. He had a southern gospel music group for over 20 years. People thought he and Vicki were joined at the hip, because you never saw one without the other. We are looking forward to singing together in Heaven.

He is survived by his wife Irene “Vicki” Coggins of the home; his brother, Johnny Wayne Coggins and his wife Vickie of Roanoke Rapids; his step-children, James Richard Black, Gregory Wayne Black and his wife Beverly and Tammy Shearin Thompson and her husband Richard all of Dunn; his step-grandchildren, Justin Black, Bradley Hansley and Karen Rose Stephenson and her husband Jeff; his step-greatgrandchildren, Garrett Black, Connor Stephenson and Lance Stephenson.

Funeral services will be held 11:30 A.M. Monday, July 3, 2017 at Central Baptist Church with Rev. David Hardy officiating. Burial will follow in Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1000 Fairground Road, Dunn, NC 28334. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:30 – 11:30 A.M. prior to the service and other times at the home.

Joyce King Bryant, 80, died Thursday, July 6, 2017, at Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach, SC.

Joyce was born, October 30, 1936, in Roanoke Rapids to the late Eugene Little and Katie Clary King. She loved being near the water having lived at the lake, river and at the beach. She especially loved cooking for and entertaining her family and friends. You could often find her cruising around on her golf cart down at Ocean Isle.  

Surviving are her life partner, Joseph “Joe” Floyd of Ocean Isle Beach, NC; son, Rip Bryant of Roanoke Rapids, NC, daughter Debbie Bryant Wheeler and husband, Eddie, of Greenville, NC; sister, Jeanette Bizzelle of Roanoke Rapids, NC; grandchildren, Michael Chase Bryant, LeAnna Mead and Christopher Wheeler; great-grandchildren, Nathan Mead, Parker Mead, and Everett Wheeler.  
Also surviving are two nieces, Susan Schlacter and Sharon Welsh.

Rev. Randy Martin will conduct funeral services in the chapel at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Monday, July 10, 2017, at 4:00 pm. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service beginning at 2:00 pm and all other times at her sister’s home, 1108 Ohio St., Roanoke Rapids, NC. The family will have a private entombment at a later date.

Mrs. Megginson was born, March 03, 1937, in Raleigh to the late Herbert and Phyllis Hagwood. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, William “Billy” Starrette, Jr. and Charles “Bucky” Megginson; brother, William Herbert Hagwood, Jr.   
Surviving are her sons, Wayne Starrette and wife, Betty, of Gaston, Leslie Starrette of Virginia Beach and Bucky Megginson of Chesapeake, VA; daughters, Sharon Sykes and husband, Tony, of Gaston, Susan Ballentine and husband, Norman, of Virginia and Bonnie Dickson and husband, Gregg, of Chesapeake, VA; brothers, Harold Hagwood of Raleigh, Glenn Settle of Germanton, NC and Mark Settle of Raeford, NC; sisters Sharon Kell and husband, Frank, of Hamilton, OH and Shyrl Burtchette and husband, Donald, of Florida; grandchildren, Tony “TL” Sykes and wife, Melissa, Kelly Crandell and husband, Charlie, Wendy Sykes, Steven Starrette, Chris Asher, Tammy Severt and husband, Jesse, Rachel Megginson, Randy Megginson, Shannon Fuhrmann and husband, Chris, and Julie Dickson; great grandchildren, Kayla Salmon, Alyssa Norwood, Rebecca Sykes, Hannah Cane, Josh Cane, William Crandell and wife, Amber, Coby Crandall, Zachery Vaughan, Hunter France, Bailee Severt, Jackson Severt, Jaden Megginson, Kenny Megginson, Jayson Megginson and Emersyn Fuhrmann, great-great grandchild, Gabriella Norwood. A service of remembrance will be conducted Saturday, June 15, 2017, in the chapel at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service at 1:00 pm.

Timothy Craig DeBerry, Sr., 50, died Tuesday, July 11, 2017, at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Timothy was born in Roanoke Rapids, March 21, 1967 to Millard Paul DeBerry, Jr. and the late M. Caroline Hines DeBerry. He loved computers and attended Victory Baptist Church. In addition to his mother, Timothy was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Herbert and Zitti Hines; paternal grandparents, Millard and Daisy DeBerry.

Surviving are his father and step-mother, Millard Paul, Jr. and Blanche DeBerry of Roanoke Rapids; son, Craig DeBerry and wife, Becky, of Grovetown, GA; daughters, Ashley DeBerry and Gary of Roanoke Rapids and Kimberly Swanson and husband, Shawn, of Washington State; girlfriend, Barbara Woodard of Conway; brothers, Shawn Rose of Roanoke Rapids and Tim Rose of Scotland Neck; grandchildren, Caroline DeBerry, Liam Swanson, Kaylie Swanson, Heath DeBerry, Ellie Bowen, Lux Swanson and Owen DeBerry. Also surviving are his nephews, Jonathan and Travis Rose; aunt, Verdie Riggan and many cousins.

Charles L. 'Lind' Glasgow Jr.

Charles L. “Lind” Glasgow, Jr., 57, passed away, May 11, 2017 in Elkins, West Virginia.

Lind was born in Rocky Mount, NC, June 19, 1959, to the late Charles Lindburg, Sr. and Leatha Alston Glasgow.

Surviving are his son, Charles Robert Glasgow and wife, Tubby, and daughter, Barbara Ann G. Barkley and husband, James, both of Elkins, WVa; sisters, Terry Glasgow Block and husband, John, of Melbourne Beach, FLA, Judy Glasgow Pearson and husband, C.W., of Roanoke Rapids, NC and Carol Glasgow Shuttle and husband, Bobby, of Greensboro, NC; his grandchildren, Alyssa Glasgow, Landon Glasgow, Aleah Barkley and Kenneth Barkley and a host of nieces and nephews.

A graveside memorial service will be held Saturday, July 15, 2017, at Elmwood Cemetery in Enfield, NC at 1:00 pm.

On July 13, 2017 at 12:32 am, surrounded by her loving family, Casi, caregiver, Rachel Beam Vinson, 77, went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ. 

Mama looked beautiful! She was affectionately known as Mema by her family and outsiders; you couldn’t help but love her. 

Rachel was born in Concord, NC, November 24, 1939, to the late David S. Beam and Lucille Carter Beam.  She loved reading the bible and her “crazy” books. She worked at J.P. Stevens until its closing and babysat many children, whom she dearly loved. She was also a member of Victory Baptist Church.  In addition to her parents, Rachel was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, John E. “PePa” Vinson. 

Surviving are her daughters, Melissa “Rock” Newsome of Roanoke Rapids and Rachel Marie Lowe and husband Jesse of Gaston; son, Robert Vinson and wife, Lisa, of Youngsville, NC; sisters, Ruth Kay Beam of Zebulon, NC, Gail Faleiana and husband, Anthony, of Roanoke Rapids; brother, David Glenn Beam of Kannapolis, and a special niece, Karen Beam; grandchildren, Billy “Bear” Newsome and wife, Amanda, Hope Newsome and fiancé, Kris Gurley, Hunter Vinson, Caleb Vinson, Tommy Norris, Jr. and Randy Norris; great grandchildren, Haley Duncan, Nichole Brooks, Isabella Newsome, Phillip Yandle, Tyler Yandle, Seth Norris, Riley Norris, Justin Russell and Madison Russell; her special lifelong friend, Joan Blanchard; sister-in-laws, Eunice Widener, Dorothy Bryant and Linda Coker and husband, Jiggs.  Also surviving are her “Grand Pets”, Uno, Charlotte, Hamilton, Katie, Hunter, Lily, Princess and Zoe.

Kenneth Lee (Kenny) Christenbury, 63, died in a traffic accident, Saturday morning, July 15, 2017.

Mr. Christenbury was born July 31, 1953, to the late John Hubert Christenbury and Iva Lee Childress Christenbury.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister: Dorothy Addison; brothers: Steve, Ronald, Jim, John and Richard Christenbury; and a half-sister: Bernice Dow.

Mr. Christenbury is survived by his children, Kenneth C. Christenbury and his wife, Stacey Davidson Christenbury, and his grandson, Aven of Falls Church, VA; his daughter, Kate Elizabeth Christenbury of Raleigh, NC (with Douglas Klein); his siblings: Janet Sinclair and her husband, Rick, of Garner, NC; and David Christenbury of Chester, VA; his ex-wife Sarah Taylor Christenbury of Raleigh, NC, and his many nephews and nieces.

Mr. Christenbury graduated from Roanoke Rapids High School in 1971, and went on to earn a business degree from NC Wesleyan College in 1977.  He was employed as an electrician, by Dominion Resources and Virginia Electric and Power Company, and later retired to Lake Hartwell, in GA. 

First and foremost, Mr. Christenbury was a devoted family man.  His children and his grandson were his life. In addition, he deeply and unconditionally loved all of his family and friends. 

Rev. Randy Martin will conduct a graveside service in Cedarwood Cemetery, Roanoke Rapids Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at 11:00 am.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Diabetes Action Research & Education Foundation (www.diabetesaction.org).

Alvin Bardin “Al” Joyner, 76, of Roanoke Rapids went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 surrounded by his family.

Al was born July 15, 1941, in Halifax County to the late Robert Washington Joyner and Hattie Barnes Joyner.

Al was a member of New Testament Christian Church.

He was a loving husband, father and grandpa, he loved his Lord and Savior, his church and the youth of the church.

Al volunteered as a reading buddy at Belmont Elementary School.

He retired after 40 years from J. P. Stevens, Bibb Company and West-Point Stevens.

He loved going to gospel sings and visiting people at home and in the nursing home. Al loved Elvis, Hank Williams, Sr. and old westerns.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Joyner of the home; his daughters, Sophia Joyner Gums of Roanoke Rapids and Nicole Joyner Elliott and her husband Larry of Drexel, NC; his grandson, Robby Gums of Roanoke Rapids; his brother, Robert “Neighbor” Joyner of Roanoke Rapids.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 22, 2017 at New Testament Christian Church with Daniel West, Minister officiating.

Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 – 9:00 P.M. Friday, July 21, 2017 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home.

Karen L. Spence, 64, died Sunday, July 23, 2017, at her home in Halifax. 

Karen was born in Framingham, Massachusetts, November 17, 1952, to the late William and Phyllis Martin Kelley. She was a great mother, grandmother and wife that always kept the Lord and family close to her heart.

Surviving is her husband of 47 years, Clyde C. Spence, of the home; daughters, Michelle Kellie Hale and husband, Russell, of Rocky Mount, Susan Spence Greene and husband, Benjamin, of Whitakers and Robin Spence of Halifax; brother William Kelley of Raleigh; grandchildren, Jennifer Angel Hale, Phillip Aycock, McKenzie Spence, Brittany Marie Greene and Bryan Greene and great grandchild Luke Aycock. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

Dr. Bane Angle will conduct funeral services in the chapel at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.  Interment will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery.

Charles “John” L. Taylor, Sr., 86, of Roanoke Rapids passed away Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh.

Mr. Taylor was born August 1, 1930 in Warren County to the late Charlie Taylor and Rebecca King Taylor. He was also preceded by ten brothers and sisters.

He loved the Great Smoky mountains. He also had a great work ethic and always had to be busy doing things.

Mr. Taylor is survived by his wife of 66 years, Dean Taylor; his sons, Charles L. Taylor, Jr., Jesse Ray Taylor and Andrew Radford; his daughters, Sarah Edwards and Pamela Taylor; his grandchildren, Alice Radford, Chris Taylor, Regina Smith, Wayne Taylor, Brian Taylor and Jesse Aycock; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 P.M. Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Harvest Temple Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. Norwood Starling officiating.  Burial will follow in Cedarwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 P.M. Friday, July 28, 2017 at Hockaday Funeral and Cremation Service and other times at the home.

David Louis Cieslinski

David Louis Cieslinski, 72, affectionately known as “Ski”, died peacefully in his home Monday, July 31, 2017, with his loving partner of 26 years, Ann C. Harris, by his side.

Ski was born in Fisherville, MI on January 1, 1945, to the late Benjamin and Alice Cieslinski. After graduating high school, he served 7 plus years in the Air Force, ending with a tour of duty in Roanoke Rapids where he remained to raise his family. He owned a successful mobile home business before working with the Postal Service as a rural mail carrier, where he retired in 2007. In addition to his parents, Ski was preceded in death by his brother, Gerald, and his grandson, Jonathan.

In addition to Ann, his survivors left to cherish his memories are sisters, Janette Luptowski and Sister Maria Pauline Cieslinski; sons, David Cieslinski and wife, Jackie, Richard Cieslinski and Brian Cieslinski and fiancé, Geneva; daughter, Theresa Cieslinski; and the mother of his children, Gail Cieslinski. Also surviving are his step daughters, Laura Bolling, Melissa Grizzard and Joy Allen; 13 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. 

The family will remember Ski’s life at a visitation at Hockaday Funeral & Cremation Service, Thursday, August 3, 2017, from 7-8:30 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held by Father Pius Wekesa at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church Friday, August 4, 2017 at 11:00 am with entombment to follow in the memorial garden.
